Today’s egg rate, market by market.

The National Egg Coordination Committee declares a suggested wholesale price for each of its market zones every morning. That declared rate is what the trade quotes for the day, and it is the figure listed on this site. Retail prices sit above it because they include transport, breakage, handling and the shopkeeper’s margin.

Once a day. The backend refreshes shortly after NECC publishes, which is usually early morning IST. Each row shows the exact date its price came from, so if a market has not declared yet you can see that its last print is older than today.

Eggs are heavy, fragile and cheap per unit, so freight dominates. Production is concentrated in a few clusters — Namakkal in Tamil Nadu and the Godavari districts of Andhra Pradesh being the largest — while demand is spread across the country. Markets close to production print the lowest rates and deficit markets such as Kolkata and Patna print the highest.

A peti (also called a case) is the standard wholesale carton of 210 eggs, made up of seven 30-egg trays. Wholesale deals are usually struck per peti or per 100 eggs, while NECC declares its rate per single egg. Every market page on this site shows all four.

Demand climbs when the weather cools, and hens lay slightly less in the cold. The two move in opposite directions at the same time, so rates typically peak between November and January and bottom out during the hottest months.
